Fever Trees - Research
Water Hole Waiting

A Note from Jane about the Research:
At one point, I
read about vervet monkeys living in "fever trees." That phrase thrilled
me because it reminded me of one of my favorite childhood stories, "The
Elephant's Child" by Rudyard Kipling. In that story, Kipling wrote
about the Great Limpopo River all set about with fever trees.
What I found out, from reading more, was that fever
trees are a kind of acacia tree with a yellow trunk. Early European
explorers in Africa made the mistake of thinking that these trees
caused malaria fevers--because the trees have yellow trunks and the
skin of people who have malaria turns yellow. Actually, it's mosquitoes
(growing fat and happy in the river water) that cause malaria. But now
I know about fever trees.
