Four-year-old Christopher, has just learned to use the telephone. He uses it to call Molly in an effort to persuade her to play with him. When her new friend leaves, she decides to play with Christopher.

"Kurtz and Trivas catch the essence of children's spats and casual rejections without making the situations  uncomfortable or cruel." School Library Journal

"A temporary rift in a friendship between two children is explored when Christopher is repeatedly rebuffed by next-door neighbor Molly, who is having fun with a visiting friend. ...soft, contemporary drawings." -- Horn Book

Classroom Connections

  • Read other books about "friends" expecially the George and Martha series by James Marshall; Frog and Toad series by Arnold Lobel; and Steven Kellogg's Best Friends (Dial, 1986).

  • Discuss how it feels when someone doesn't pay any attention to you and leaves you out of play activities. Make a list of how you could include other people even when you have a new person to play with.
