Jane Kurtz was invited to be part of Laura Bush's planned event for the extended Inaugural Activities. Mrs. Bush, a former librarian, is often described as having a passion for reading and books. The First Lady's intent was to bring attention to reading and to highlight outstanding American authors during this historic occasion.

Jane was one of fourteen authors, in addition to those who would be on stage, to be invited. The formal event took place on Jan. 19, 2001 from 10-11 a.m. at Constitution Hall. In the afternoon, each of the children's authors visited with children in an hour-long presentation at an area school.
